Snuff out small fires before they grow.

Most crises don’t come out of the blue.

They start as a flicker. It could be a disgruntled staff member or a clumsy internal email that’s easily misinterpreted.

Perhaps a badly handled customer complaint or a values breach that’s quietly tolerated.

There’s no shortage of fuel for those baby flames. Small issues don’t stay small for long.

Before you know it, you’re facing a much bigger problem – at best, a time-sucker while you fight the fire. At worst, a public reputation hit that does long-term damage.

The most acute danger isn’t the issue itself.

It’s the tendency of many leaders to “wait and see”.

This week I found it very encouraging, while running a session for senior leaders, to hear one example of an exec team that’s introduced “emerging issues” as a standing item on their weekly agenda.

Priming your antennae for problems in their early stages – and being prepared to take quick action – can save you in terms of time, financial drain and loss of credibility.

In the everyday grind, it’s tempting to prioritise the urgent and visible. But credible leaders know reputation risk often sits quietly in the seemingly minor, unresolved tensions below the surface.

Strong brands and healthy cultures are vigilant – scanning constantly and acting early. They resolve issues while they’re still manageable.

You rarely hear about those moments.

And that’s exactly the point.

Credibility is hard to build in the middle of a crisis. Instead, strengthen it in your ongoing practice of addressing flickers before they erupt.
