Why Your Job Title Doesn’t Earn You Trust-And What Actually Does
It’s time for fresh energy and direction for some of our political parties, with new leaders taking the reins and looking to make their mark.
Building trust is challenge number one for anyone stepping into a leadership role. I believe a leader needs to embody three personas if they want to truly create credibility that connects.
Truth-teller: Put bluntly, we don’t believe people in positions of power. It’s a sentiment echoed on social media every day and it’s borne out by global research. We don’t know where to go for credible information.
Rather than expecting others to listen because you have a fancy title, be a leader who’s a source of truth. Play it with a straight bat. If something goes wrong, own it and be clear about what you’re doing to fix it. Be relentless in your truth-telling.
Translator: As a leader, who need to know your stuff – but you can’t just push information at people. You must also know your audience; their needs and concerns based on what the world looks like for them.
You’re the conduit; the one taking complex and often confusing material and making it clear and real for those who need it most.
Torchbearer: People trust reputable leaders and organisations. Be an ambassador for your business, consistently communicating what you stand for.
Let’s see how our national leaders go with building and rebuilding trust over the next few years. We’ll all be watching.
