AI can’t fix poor leadership

I was blown away by some of the insights shared at the International Association of Business Communicators (IAPC) APAC conference – and I was delighted to share a few of my own.

Of course, AI ruled the roost when it came to topics covered across the two days. It’s inescapable.

There was a clear echo among the professional communicators in the room: Leaders who think they can outsource responsible judgement to AI are very much mistaken.

One of my favourite quotes of the conference: “AI can’t fix sh*tty leadership.”

In the public domain, AI makes inconsistencies easy to find. Say one thing and do the opposite? The LLMs will dredge it all up for everyone to see.

We’ve seen some good and not-so-great examples lately of leaders responding publicly when things don’t go to plan. I look at some of these in my latest video, which you can catch here: https://youtu.be/OpJNnFmz_UY

While you can’t control the growing misinformation monster that AI is feeding, there are still plenty of things leaders can control, including:

  •  Knowing what you and your organisation stands for.

  • Communicating about it clearly and consistently.

  • Making considered and fair decisions.

  • Always acting in a way that matches what you say.

  • Owning your mistakes and fixing issues immediately.

  • Being honourable, transparent and kind, even when it’s difficult.

What would you add to this list?
