Credibility is a pattern, built over time.
You can’t “switch on” credibility for an important meeting or big presentation.
People won’t trust and believe you in the pressure moments if they don’t trust and believe you in private conversations.
Your credibility is built – or eaten away – in every interaction. The energy you bring to Teams calls. How you help people feel safe and respected in one-on-one conversations even when the topic is uncomfortable. How clearly you get your message across in front of a group. The tone of your emails, especially when you’re under the pump.
I like to say that credible leaders are effective in all environments:
Stage – they’re confident and relatable in front of others
Screen – they connect strongly via online platforms and video
Sanctum – they’re compelling and trustworthy in closed-door meetings
Script – they write in an appropriate tone and with clarity that ensures people get the message the first time they read it
To everyone experiencing you, these are all pieces of the same puzzle: your credibility.
Outstanding leaders create consistency across every platform and every interaction, particularly when they’re busy or stressed.
Credibility isn’t a one-off performance, it’s a pattern.
Pay attention to the small interactions as much as the significant ones. They’re telling people who you are.
And here’s a question for you: Is it possible to smile too much when you’re communicating? The answer in my latest video might surprise you. https://youtu.be/gliZq5gpkjc
