In pressure moments, it’s common for people to lurch one way or the other. When the stakes rise, some leaders dial up the authority and dial down the warmth. They hide behind complex information and avoid getting too close to those who matter.

Others go to the opposite extreme; they become everyone’s best mate but seem wishy-washy and don’t inspire confidence.

Here’s the key: You can be decisive without being cold. Your communication can be both direct and kind. You can project confidence without making others feel small.

The moments when you most need to show your strength are often the very times people need to see your humanity.
