Don’t overfeed the birds

One of the trickiest leadership dilemmas is striking the balance between empowering your team and over-functioning for them.

If you’re constantly swooping in with all the answers, you’re like the bird always dropping food into eager, hungry beaks.

That’s helpful in the short term, but unsustainable. Your people don’t build confidence in their own abilities. You feel exhausted and are on the road to burnout.

But leave them entirely to their own devices and you risk the opposite: a team that feels unsupported and even directionless.

As with many problems, the key is solid communication.

Each of your team members has different strengths and requirements for your support. Get to know what they are, through intentional conversations.

Support them just enough to let them soar.
