THE WORLD MIGHT FEEL SHAKY RIGHT NOW, BUT AS A LEADER YOU CAN ADD MORE CERTAINTY.

Leaders who are credible speakers make sure they’re in the right language zone.

Back when I worked in local government there was a running joke about “council time’ - meetings starting 15 or 20 minutes late as staff trickled in.

That was before I joined Wollongong City Council with its then CEO, Rod Oxley.

Rod’s mantra was, “This meeting will start on time, even if I’m the only one there.”

And he was as good as his word. No meeting chaired by Rod ever started after its advertised time.

In his book, “council time” was simply not acceptable.

You can imagine that everyone was only ever late ONCE to one of Rod’s meetings. You’d never do it a second time, even if you had to sprint down the corridor to make it in the door.

That’s stuck with me as a stand-out example of a leader setting clear expectations and following through with actions.

Our world continues to be very uncertain, that’s for sure. People in your teams - and also outside the business in your customer base and community - are craving as much certainty as possible.

You mightn’t have all the answers - who does, right now? But as a leader, there are many things you can do to add clarity and certainty to your interactions.

It starts with clearly stating your expectations and making sure your actions consistently line up with your words.

What more can you do today to be clear and certain in your communication?
